I was in the market for a coyote/varmint gun. I wanted an inexpensive, shorter barreled, bolt action rifle chambered in 5.56 because I have a lot of 5.56, .223 and PMAGs, so the Ruger American made practical sense to me. I like cold hammer forged barrels due to their durability and accuracy, so I was looking forward to this rifle. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed after sighting it in. I knocked off 2 stars for the following reasons. 1) The stock isn’t as rigid as I would like it to be. A simple fix to upgrade the stock, but that requires more money spent. 2) I might have to try more types of ammo, but I don’t think this barrel has found its preferred cartridge because the best group I got was a little over 2” at 100 yds. I tried 8 different ammo's with varying grain weights and most of the groups were around 3” to 4” at 100 yds. I can live with 2” groups, but I was hoping for MOA. 3) The first two gripes I have with this rifle are minor compared to number 3. By far, the most frustrating thing about this rifle is trying to chamber a round. I don’t know if it’s the bolt or magazine, but with the included 10 round PMAG, 90% of the rounds would not feed smoothly. Most of the time, the bolt would’t close and I’d have to slightly pull back the bolt and reinsert the round, sometime multiple times before it would seed. If I pulled the bolt back too far, it would try and cycle another round and double feed. So, I would have to drop the mag and the rounds and try again. I tried different PMAGs with the same results. I ordered a metal magazine to see if that will fix the issue, but I don’t have it yet. Regardless, out of the box, this was a frustrating rifle to shoot. If this could consistently chamber a round, I would give this rifle 4.2 stars, but unfortunately it can’t.

Accurate, lightweight, quick handling and takes AR mags, what's not to like. I like it so much that I own three of them, each with various scopes and loads in each for various types of hunting. I can't say enough good things about this rifle and highly recommend it.

Great rifle! My first Ruger American and I love it. Great trigger, and very accurate, even while using bilk 55 grain 223.

This is a great rifle for the money. I’m able to put together good groups with 5.56 or .223 I haven’t had any issues with any ammo so far. As expected with this round there is a lot of report when you pull the trigger.

I upgraded the chassis to Magpul and add a suppressor on it. The stock definitely feel better and shots better as well. Highly recommend it specially today’s ammo price is crazy. It’s fun to shoot 556 with bolt action.

I got a precise one. Mine likes 50-53 grain federal ammo most. It easily shoots 1/4" MOA both suppressed and unsuppressed.

Light and compact, takes standard AR-15 magazines...good addition to any collection!

ruger American ranch 223

I originally was going to order this rifle in 7.62x39 but was swayed by the fact it also takes AR 5.56 magazines of which I already have those. This rifle is small and compact and with the Bushnell 3x9x50 scope I put on it turned it into exactly what I wanted. All the reviews say it's a very accurate rifle and I hope I get to the range soon and find out for myself. As always, a seamless transaction with Bud's.

I love this rifle. It is short, light and very handy. I live in a less than free state. My goal with this rifle was for it to feed from every AR mag I have...and it does. It's hard to beat a Ruger. Buds is amazing...but you knew that already.

Bought this rifle to replace a bolt action 243 that I never used. Chambered in 5.56, this American Ranch rifle is extremely accurate right out of the box. A great rifle to have and since it's a 5.56 mm, there is plenty of ammo for it.

The Ruger American Ranch rifle is my first Nato 5.56/.223 rem firearm. Since I shoot from a bench rest mostly I preferred a conventional bolt action to an AR style platform. At this price point I wasn't expecting a high quality fit and finish firearm. However, the fit and finish of this gun are far below what I was expecting. There are manufacturing tool marks on the barrel and the receiver. The black matte finish on the barrel is incomplete in several spots with bare metal showing through. The functioning of the bolt and receiver are within reason and the accuracy is ok.. So, I believe the rifle will suit my needs.....just disappointed and surprised at the lack of quality in the fit and finish. I have several other Ruger rifles, and this is by far the worst. Unfortunately, in today's world, there aren't many other choices out there.
