while occasional use of +p will be ok a steady diet of them will increase stress and wear on the gun

The K frame S&W's will stand 357 magnum pressures and the +P 38 's generate about half the pressure of 357's. It will be fine. I shot +P 38 loads in an old K frame I had for years in competition with no problems.
