How soft is the recoil pad? Is it hard rubber or more like a Limbsaver?

HARD RUBBER. However, .223 recoil is extremely light (almost non-existent) in this rifle that it won't be an issue at all. I hope this helps!
Jay, it is a Firm Rubber but, the .223/5.56 is a light recoiling round in a rifle. Cheers and stay safe!

Its a mostly solid piece of rubber, that more for a good purchase/grip against your shoulder then it is for reducing recoil, but james is correct that 223 is not a very recoil heavy cartridge. But if tou wanted to you could always run a muzzle break to further reduce recoil and or get a limbs limbsaver, but you likely won't need it.
