Can an aftermarket pistol grip (with no ability to accept a stock) be added to this and not change it's "firearm" status?

I would see no reason why that would be unlawful. As long as it has no butt stock, its not a SBS. A pistol grip would be legal here.
here is a pistol grip for the 870 budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/73289
Yes you can do this no problem John. You won't be able to add a stock though.
As long as it is a pistol grip and not a stock you should be good
yes you can add a pistol grip but you cant add a stock as the shotgun barrel would then be to shor and illegal as a "sawed off shotgun "

Yes, you can, but absolutely do not add a Shoulder stock.
