Remington 1100 Overview

First introduced in 1963, The Remington 1100 shotgun was the first gas operated shotgun that was shown to greatly reduce the felt recoil of the gun. The gun quickly gained popularity among hunters and clay shooters alike because of the reduced fatigue from repeated firing. The Remington 1100 comes in at just around the 8 pound mark, making it extremely easy to handle and light in weight, but also very dependable. The model 1100 was designed to totally rewrite the book over Remington’s model 58 as well as the model 878. Up until that time, a lot of the gas operated shotguns maintained stiff recoil from the long cycling motion that was inherent to John Browning's design.

The design team invested many countless hours getting information from shooters about the design before putting it into production. In 1963, plastic shotshells had just come on the scene, and even the old paper shotshells were sporting new and improved coatings. This certainly made for more dependable ammunition, which without doubt assisted the actual 1100. The styling of the 1100 was different than any that had been formerly seen. That, coupled with the new advantage in which any 2-3/4" or 3” shell might be fired without having to adjust the shotgun in any way was also a distinct advantage.

The Remington 1100 can be purchased today in 12, 16, 20, 28 gauge offerings as well as the .410 bore. Barrel lengths are available in a variety of lengths from 18-30 inches. When accompanied with the right choke tube, there is virtually nothing that this gun cannot do. This shotgun is actually credited with establishing the actual starting era of the dependable, extremely successful, gas operated auto loading shotguns. In truth, the Remington 1100 still among the best-selling semi-automatic shotguns in US history. A real milestone for the Remington 1100 came in 1978, when one of their shotguns was able to complete some 24,000 rounds before having a maintenance issue.

The Remington 1100 is widely used in skeet shooting, sporting clays, trap shooting, water fowling and certainly in overall general hunting. There are some tactical variations that are used through many US police forces and federal agencies as well. Foreign governments such as the Mexican Naval Infantry, the Military Polis, and the Rio de Janeiro Condition, are among those benefitting from its use abroad.
