Savage A17 Overview

First introduced in 2015, the Savage A17 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered for the .17 HMR cartridge. Semi-automatic rifles chambered for magnum rimfires, always raise quite a stir in the long gun community, and this one is no exception.



The Savage A17 has a delayed blowback action. This action incorporates the use of a moderately light-weight bolt, and an easy to operate recoil spring, as an alternative to just putting weight to the bolt and a heavier spring to control bolt opening in a blowback rifle.



The barrel on this jewel of a rifle is a tapered 22-inch masterpiece that measures 1.01 inch at the receiver and tapers to 0.6 inch at the muzzle. Don’t even ask, you know that a rifle as sweet as this, has to have a seriously free floated barrel. The receiver and barrel both wear a high polished blued finish. The receiver is tailored with a pair of scope bases straight from the manufacturer. The trigger guard, stock, and magazine are made of a matte black polymer. To top the amenities off, the magazine is rotary designed and holds 10 rounds of .17 HMR ammunition.



No tack driving Savage rifle would be complete without a Savage Accu-Trigger. Savage A17’s magazine fitted securely into the bottom of the stock, snaps flush and lays completely flush with the stock contour for a really smooth carry. The rifle’s safety has a crossed-bolt design, when you disengage it you should push it from right to left. By having it operate in this fashion, makes it more secure and totally safe. The ammunition is plenteous and not terrifically high (about 30 cents a round). Deadly accurate at 200 yards, and with some practice out to 300 yards, I’ve seen prairie dogs really wish that they had stayed home on any given day. Wind is not your friend with a .17HMR, but then again, the wind hates anything that’s a rimfire.
