Sig Sauer P226 Overview

The Sig Sauer P226 was developed from the original model P220. It is a D/A, S/A pistol that shoots 9mm luger ammunition with a max capacity of 10 rounds. It was designed with similar characteristic of SIG Sauer P220. The P226, like the other members of the SIG Classic family, functions by the locked breech short-recoil mechanism. On firing, the slide and barrel are locked collectively for just a few millimeters of rearward action, and then the barrel is cammed down at the rear. By this time the bullet has left the barrel, and the force has lowered to safe levels, the slide finishes the rearward stroke, ejecting the spent cartridge. The recoil spring then propels the slide ahead, stripping a round from the magazine and in the last few millimeters of forwards movement the barrel is cammed upwards, locking the slide and barrel together again.



Rather than the locking lugs and recesses milled into the barrel and slide of other Browning-type weapons, the P226 snaps the barrel and slide collectively using an extensive breech section of the barrel locking into the ejection port. The basic SIG P226 integrates a decocking lever on the left side of the of its blocky side, just above the magazine discharge button. In chambering or firing a round, the cycling motion of the slide instantly cocks the hammer. By utilizing the decocking lever, the hammer can be de-cocked without allowing the firing pin to become available, via a rolling block.
