Illegal to copy military id

So I was about to purchase a firearm with my military discount until I saw that you have to send a copy front and back of your id. I thought I remember a security forces officer telling me that it is actually illegal to copy it. I checked again today with security forces and personnel and they both said that it is intact illegal. US code title 18 part 1 chapter 33 code 701. how are people getting around this and if it's illegal how can Buds ask for it?

Is this a 308 Win barrel or 7.62 NATO barrel? I can't find anything on Remington's website that says anything about 7.62. This rifle is not listed on Buds website under 308win, it's located under 308 (7.62). I'm only going to shoot 308 Winchester ammo.
