Hi Richard, The scope you decide on should be determined by the type of shooting you plan to do. The fact that it is an AR does not determine what type of scope so much... although it will play a role in the mount you choose.
I have one of the scopes you mentioned on my AR carbine so I can speak to that. The Bushnell AR 4-12. Its a great scope "for the money". Nice clear glass and a bonus of a reticle for points 1,200,300 yds etc. But then again I bought that for a specific purpose, to bust prairie dogs (little bitty targets) at longer range. For that, it and a weaver one piece mount serve that purpose great without busting the bank for a part time varmit rifle. But .... its heavy... and I knew that getting it but that suits my purpose as I only use it in that format occasionally. If you want an "all-round scope" in my opinion it makes an AR carbine too top heavy.
When Im "training", short range, rapid fire etc I put on a red-dot. Its the beauty of the AR. I can change easy between scope and red dot.
If you want more an "all round" scope, I would go for a 1-4 X 24 illuminated. Means you can use it pretty much like an unmagnified red dot, and dial it up to 4 (or 6 on some) and get out pretty far. This is the bushnell version but there are plenty other brands with the same configuration out there - Bushnell - 1-4x 24mm Throw Down PCL. Also, the Nikon P223 fixed power scope in 3X32 could also be an excellent choice. Hope this helps!
I would start with a scope that is good for close quarter and mid range work such as : budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/26_99/products_id/714014558/NIKON+P-223+1.5-4.5X20+BDC600+MATTE ( a high fixed or variable scope is not useful for close range self defense applications) --- Virtually any of the pistol laser/light combo's will fit just fine on the bottom rail of the rifle.
This one is very good for the money budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/90965 The NcSTAR Mark III Gen 2 Tactical Series 3-9x42 Tactical Scope with an Illuminated P4 Sniper Reticle is a great scope for your AR-15 style rifle. The NcSTAR Mark III Tactical Series Scope comes with a P4 Sniper with BDC and 1/2 MOA adjustments to ensure your hits are on target at distance. The Mark III comes with a lowered mount for easier use on AR-15 Style Rifles.

Ruger AR-556 AR-15 5.56 NATO 16.1" Semi Auto Rifle, 30+1
Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 Rifle Scope seems pretty nice, just got one for a .450 bushmaster. custom dial lets you zero in and just turn the dial to a known distance and is calibrated for specific ammo. i believe they also give you another set of dials for free for one other caliber if you want.
