  • Hi Jason,
1992-2006 Models: Winchester reintroduced CRF in the "Classic" series, which many consider to be of high quality, often surpassing pre-64 models in performance.
2006-Present Models: Production moved to FN Herstal in Belgium and later to Portugal. While some users report good quality, there have been concerns about quality control issues, particularly with newer models. Some rifles have experienced problems with components like the extractor.
    .
Recent feedback indicates mixed experiences with current production Model 70s. While some users praise the fit and finish, others report issues such as:
    De fective extractors
    Inconsistent bedding quality
    Variability in accuracy
Overall, while the Model 70 still holds a strong reputation, the quality may not consistently match the high standards of its earlier years.
    .
Stay safe & have a great day!

  • Dear Sir Jason,
I wanted to share a bit about the Winchester Model 70. Over the years, its quality has seen some variation. The post-2008 models, made in South Carolina under FN, blend the timeless design of the pre-64 rifles with modern manufacturing techniques. This combination often results in improved accuracy and reliability, making them a practical and dependable choice for hunters. That said, many enthusiasts and collectors still hold the pre-64 models in high regard, cherishing their legendary craftsmanship and classic appeal.
I hope this information is helpful to you, Sir Jason. Please take good care of yourself. 🙏🏻

  • No, the quality of the Winchester Model 70 has significantly declined since around 2020-2021, with issues like poor fit and finish, inconsistent triggers, and diminished accuracy now becoming common, a major shift from its previous high-quality standard and even worse than some post-64 models. Production cost-cutting, likely due to the pandemic and changes in company management, is a major factor, leading to the use of cheaper barrels and parts. While the earlier FN-assembled models were excellent, and even the push-feed models had high quality, the current production rifles are no longer considered the benchmark they once were.

  • Hi Jason and welcome to the forum. I have both an older Model 70 and newer, 2 years old Model 70. The mixed reviews are due to a bit of inconsistency in quality control during manufacturing batches, hence the mixed reviews. I guess I got lucky in that both my Model 70's were crafted top notch from the factory. Since it may be luck of the draw for "any" firearm, just remember to fully inspect it at your local FFL before completing any paperwork and refuse transfer if anything is amiss. After the paperwork is done, you own the firearm at that point, quality or not. Makes the choice to five the newer Model 70 a lot easier knowing, you can send it back for a replacement or refund. Cheers, stay safe and enjoy!

  • Sir Jason,
The Winchester Model 70's quality has varied over time. The post-2008 models, produced in South Carolina under FN, combine pre-64 design with modern manufacturing, offering improved accuracy and reliability, though not identical to the original hand-fitted rifles. They are highly regarded for their action and out-of-the-box precision, making them a practical choice for hunters. However, purists and collectors still prefer the pre-64 models for their legendary craftsmanship and classic design.
Hope the above information helps Sir Jason and please take care 🙏🏻

  • Good evening to you!!
Historically, the quality of the Winchester Model 70 has been debated, with significant changes occurring throughout its manufacturing history. While some collectors prize the pre-1964 models, many modern Model 70s produced since 2008 have been praised for their accuracy and improved features. However, recent reports from 2021–2022 and later indicate that quality control may be slipping, with some new rifles showing inconsistencies and defects.
    The decline of 2021–present
According to some reports, a notable decline in quality control for new Model 70 rifles began around 2021. The following issues have been observed:
Trigger problems: The once-reliable MOA trigger is reported to have become inconsistent, with some adjustments having no effect.
Barrel quality: Inexpensive button-rifled barrels replaced the previously used FN hammer-forged barrels. This has led to some reports of rough throats, bad crowns, and diminished accuracy, particularly in stainless steel models.
Fit and finish: New rifles have shown more machine marks on the receiver, stiff safeties, and other ill-fitted or rough parts.
Production location: Since 2008, manufacturing has moved from the U.S. to FN facilities in Portugal. While early Portuguese-made rifles were assembled with high-quality American parts, newer rifles are fully made in Portugal, with some parts sourced from undisclosed locations. Hope this helps. Have a good rest of your day.
