  • I've seen some mention of a "pencil barrel". What does this mean and how does it affect performance? I haven't shot an AR for twenty years and that was with my Nat'l Guard unit. How does this compare to rifles used as basic issue military ARs?

  • Andrew, the "Pencil" profile is simply a thinner "Sport" Barrel. It will usually be slightly less accurate due to increased barrel harmonics. Thinner barrels also heat up quicker which would cause point of impact to change when heated. I would not worry too much about this as we Civilians don't usually shoot sustained fire very often. The basic "Military" issue barrel is heavier and is slightly more accurate with longer heat up intervals.
