  • Does anyone know the approximate viscosity of the "gun oils" for sale ? Anyone have any info ? I buy a container of gun oil, who knows what is in it. The prices work out to about $50 a quart. Hmmmmmmm.

  • David there was on analysis that placed the average gun oil at approximately oil 5 weight equivalent. Many folks use synthetic motor oil at 1/20 to 1/100th the cost of gun oil. It was also determined that Automatic Transmission fluid was a better lubricant for firearms than motor oil although more expensive. That said, I have been using mobil 1 synthetic (the same I use in my vehicles) with no issues for many many years.
