The end of the barrel appears to be slightly thicker. Is that a thread protector over a threaded barrel?

That is exactly what it is Tom. The thread protector on the SUB-2000™ is removable, if the shooter desires to replace the thread protector with a compatible accessory for the 9/16"-24 threads.

no its not threaded its just the way the front sight assy makes it look in the picture
