Is this gun very heavy and difficult to hold and shoot due to weight? How comfortable are the wood grips with holding the gun and recoil management? Is the gun really worth the cost? How does it compare to the Ruger sp101 9mm revolver? Thank you Mark

Mark, the wood grips are actually super comfortable by design. The Smith & Wesson 986 will be 7 to 8oz heavier which will have less muzzle jump than the Ruger SP101 due to the extra weight and will have slightly more accuracy potential. Since it is 9mm we are talking about, my personal choice would be the SP101 if you plan to carry and the 986 if it will be a range/target pistol. Either works.
