The .380 is pretty mild on recoil for most people but it can be still be a little snappy as they say. Before buying anything you'll want to have your wife shoot one. If the .380 doesn't do it for her try a .22 magnum revolver such as a Ruger LCR, Charter Arms Pathfinder or S&W 351. These are light recoiling but are kinda loud. While the .22mag isn't a top shelf defensive load there are some new rounds made especially for small revolvers that are very effective.
