it depends on what you are doing if you are into upland hunting you may choose the 20 ga due to the lighter weight being easier to carry all day. self defense 12 ga every time. clay shooting either will do the job so choose what you like

Mark, there is some misconception. Most 20 gauge shotguns are scaled down/lighter than their 12 gauge counterpart so the recoil is not exactly the caliber difference you might expect. A 12 gauge with low recoil tactical loads will be in the same recoil ball park as 20 gauge full loads. The 12 gauge will be more effective for sure.
