I'm looking to get my 7 year old boy his first rifle. Based on my research thus far, I'm close to settling on the Savage Axis XP .243 Youth. https://www.budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/104489
With a scope (Weaver 3-9x40mm) is about $110 more than w/o the scope. Is that scope any good? Would I be better off buying the gun without a scope and spending that $110 on a better scope? Any scope recommendations in that price range?

I think the scope package is a good deal the weaver is a good scope and having it mounted with the correct rings makes it the way I would go. Its nice for him to be able to open the package and start shooting (sighting in) without having to take the time to mount and boresight a scope
