Does this mean the rifle I want is not available and they won't know when it will be available?

If it listed as "In Stock" then it is available. Option to pick serial number is only available to some firearms. If you have more inquiry, use "Chat Now" in the bottom right to contact Buds customer service.

Anne, if it does not say 'out of stock' it is available. You can choose a serial number on selected firearms, this may not be one of them.

Anne, no, if it is listed as in stock, there is just no select-able serial number. It will be random. Cheers and stay safe!
