Both are great, and one isn't really any better then the other, for most people it comes down to where you want your safety, the Mossberg features a grip tang safety, and the Remington features a crossbolt safety. Other then that the performance is going to be very similar.

The Mossberg 500 is just as good as the Remington 870. Both are fantastic shotguns. Out of the two I prefer the 870 but that's just personal preference, they are equally reliable and accurate. Hope this helps.
