Eric, unfortunately S&W tends not to certify their low end .380 firearms on the CA DOJ Handgun Roster. I would go with the 9mm any way in CA : budsgunshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/83345/smith+&+wesson+m&p9+shield+7%2b18%2b1+9mm+31+california+approved
