This is good range ammo. It's frangible Wich means when it hits the target it breaks into a bunch of tiny pieces making it less likely for a ricochet. Some people say frangible ammos good for self defense because it won't over penetrate. So could be used as either but I'd consider this more for the range. Hope this helps.
