  • I have a new .22 Salvage Bolt and have seen on internet about using standard velocity (1000-1100 FPS) lead ammo to lap a barrel. They clean barrel, shoot 100 rounds, shoot 100 more rounds, clean barrel, shoot 100 more rounds, clean barrel and process is complete. Anyone ever done this or know for sure it really works????

  • Kemp, I have never done it with my .22 LR rifles, but you can if you want to. It really depends what kind of shooting you will be doing. Video here for .22LR barrel break in and whether or not you need to do it >>> youtube.com/watch?v=eywvg5aDlu8

  • Kemp, yes I've done it pretty much since I started shooting. For 22lrs unless you're competition shooting doubt it'll make much of a difference but I still do it. I mostly just worry about doing it in my bigger calibers. For that you run a bore snake threw after every round for 10 rounds. After 10 rounds I do it every 5 rounds until I hit 50 rounds. The theory is it will help smooth out any rough spots in the barrel for better accuracy. Does it make a difference I'm not really sure but I do it for peace of mind. Hope this helps.

  • Kemp, I have been a fan for years of Christensen Arms break in process (have many of their maintenance books) : https://christensenarms.com/barrel-break-in/ ---------- In rimfire use standard velocity lead rounds initially instead of jacketed bullets unless 22WMR or 17HMR. Cheers and stay safe!
