Why does the magazine extend passed the grip? Unlike others I've seen. Can I purchase a separate mag that will fit flush with the bottom?

Andrew, it's just because of the magazines base plate. You can get magazines that will fit flush. Here's a link to a magazine that doesn't have the polymer base plate and will fit flush.
