Yes, 5.56x45mm and 5.56 NATO are the same cartridge. Also yes, .223 Remington is safe to fire in a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO rifle such as yours, though the reverse is not necessarily true due to pressure rating differences in the two cartridges and chamber dimensions in the barrel of rifles designed specifically for .223. In your case though, not an issue.
