  • I reside in Virginia and purchased a mossberg 590 shockwave at the gun show maybe 2 years back. I just started looking at the print out they gave me about the ATF AND SERIAL # and so on. I notice this print out seems to be generic and online. The serial # does not match my 590. What can/ should do?

  • Hi Dennis and welcome. The Shockwave you purchased has a serial number on the firearm itself which was recorded by the ATF when you filled out form 4473 during sale. The generic letter has nothing to do with the actual firearm. Your local FFL actually input the actual serial number/firearm into their inventory before transfer to you. The Generic letter with your shockwave was the ATF has determined the Shockwave to be a 'firearm', not a shotgun, not a pistol. It is a letter you can keep with you should anyone question the legality of your gun. Your Shockwave is legally registered so no worries. Cheers and stay safe!

  • that is just a generic letter explaining why the shockwave is a legal firearm and not a nfa short barrel shotgun
