Anyone know if a purchase made with a layaway plan for a hand gun to be shipped to an FFL in NJ will instantly trigger the use of one of my NJ hand gun permits? Or will that happen on the FFL’s end once it’s paid off and shipped to them? Asking because my handgun permit expires at the end of the month and I want to make sure I use it before I lose it. Thanks in advance!

Hi Jazmine, your handgun permit will not be executed until you pick up your handgun from your FFL. If the gun is on layaway, you need to pay it off now. And remember, the permit is executed the day you pick up the handgun, not the day you fill out paperwork. As you probably know, here in NJ the NICS check can take 3-5 days, so give yourself plenty of time. If your permit expires the end of the month, I would make sure the gun is at your FFL by the 25th.
Also, you must not have purchased another handgun in the previous 30 days from the date you fill out form 4473.
