I am considering a Maverick 88 with 18.5 barrel (12 guage) for home security. I think I want #4 buck. Is it better to get 3 inch or 2 1/2 inch or does it even matter. Also what ammo brand is best. I live on the Florida panhandle near Pensacola. Fist time shotgun owner. Thank you

Hi John, the Maverick 88 is a great choice for home defense. Yes, you want #4 buckshot, 2 3/4" shells will do the job.

I also utilize the Maverick 88 for home defense with #4 buck-2-3/4". I load 5 in the tube but, that middle cartridge is a home defense lighter recoil slug. Great Defense Tool you'll be happy with!! Brenneke is the slug I use in the middle.
