manual safety "We all know that the most common form of safety mechanism is a switch/lever that when placed in the “safe” position, prevents a pull of the trigger from firing the firearm. There are many designs of these active safeties, but the two most common mechanisms are a block or latch that prevents the trigger and/or firing mechanism from moving, and a device that disconnects the trigger from the firing mechanism. These are the oldest forms of “active” safety mechanism and are widely used, with the strong thumb used to engage or disengage the external manual safety lever or switch. By the way, for some guns pushing the lever UP puts the safety on, while for others pushing it DOWN puts it on.
