  • is it necessary to field strip and clean a brand new pistol? i have read some reviews in which people say that their new gun shoots great right out of the box. other people say they thoroughly clean and lubricate their gun before they ever use it.

  • It is good to clean and lube them even when new, as they usually have Cosmoline, or some type of grease that is meant to protect the firearm during storage from rust etc but its not meant for lubrication.

  • it depends on what they put on the gun for shipping some guns use a heavy oil that gets sticky and it will need to be cleaned some are shipped almost in a ready to shoot state I always at least field strip inspect and lube any new gun

  • I always field strip it wipe it down and lube it, making sure the rails are wet. Drag a bore snake through it and go. If it's stainless steel I keep the rails very wet for the 1st 500 rounds to prevent galling until they are smooth.

  • Hi David, I do to get some of the oil from the barrel only. That first cleaning will get out any micro metal shavings from first time firing at the factory and also gives you a chance to verify the internals are in good working order as well. I always inspect a new firearm by field stripping to head off any potential mechanical issue early.
