Beyond what the marketing copy says, can the frame of P226 in .22 cal handle 9mm rounds?

Yes.Using a SIG SAUER Caliber X-Change Kit, the P226-22 is convertible to 9mm, .357SIG, or .40S&W.

I doubt it. Unless it's a normal P226 frame with a conversion kit installed, the internals are likely completely different.
