Shaun, 5 inch barreled handgun or any of the carbines in 45ACP would work. As you know, ammunition selection will be key and distances will depend on barrel length. Please don't use a pistol to do any kind of big game hunting. Pistols were not designed to hunt with you need a hunting rifle and rifle ammunition. You have to make sure you can kill the animal with one shot if possible you would have to be very close to a dear to make sure that you made a kill with one shot.
