Sorry for such a long winded answer but there are alot of considerations when purchasing an optic for your AR in my previous answer i didn't even mention price, price on a GOOD optic (which if this is for a home defense rifle you want to go as good of an optic as you can afford, don't trust your life to a $30 chachski, get something proven)
Id also look at Alabama Arsenal torture tests

Alot I'm throwing at you i know but the optic can be one of the most important things on your home defense rifle.

  • Depends i like LPVOS because 1 or 2x you can quickly and easily acquire targets inside of 100 yards and then if you should need to reach out further you have higher magnification (most lpvos come in 1-4×, 1-6×, 1-8x, or 1-10×) at 1x it is just like having a red dot, but they usually have etched reticle as well in case your battery dies or the electronics fail. Lpvos id recommend a strike eagle by Vortex, or the Vortex put gen2 1-6×, primary arms also has some excellent options at many price points. For the out to 100 yards shooting your wanting to do you can also look at holographic sights (Eotech, and Vortex Huey) these usually have a dual reticle set up (32 or 64 moa ring with a 2 moa dot in the middle, the larger ring is for inside 25yards to acquire targets super fast, while the 2 moa is for precision shooting out 200 yards easy, further with more skill and training) or you can look at reddots which will have higher battery life and come in way more varieties and reticle choices Holsuns 510C, 510C, the HS530, and HS503 are all really quality with a tin of great features, top of the heap would be trijiconMRO aim point t2 or an aimpoint pro patrol, for more budget friendly with still a good amout of feature Sig romeo5, and the sig MSR (BUDS has this one in stock for under $100) if you have any noticeable stigmatism a prism sight may be best bet there are several by Vortex and primary arms to choose from.
    Id look at some reviews
