Is it any good for hunting deer? Besides the obvious flop with the buttstock?

if you are asking about the Howa 308 the answer is yes it would be a great deer rifle And good on almost any game animal in the U.S.
Once you get used to the actual rig, it will make an excellent venison getter. This will be highly accurate which "shot placement" in any hunting scenario is paramount. Once you get accustomed to the shooting potential, I would feel sorry for the deer in your neck of the woods.
Tomas please tell us what gun you are asking about

They are a great rifle. The action is similar to the Remington only stronger. The bolt handle is forged right along with bolt, they are one piece, the tiggers are adjustable and can be adjusted for a darn nice pull, they have a claw type extractor and the ejector is in the bolt head. Overall avery nice and smooth working design. They are made in Japan.
The only drawback is if you have one re barreled, they have a metric thread which is more of a pain to cut and there are not as great of selection of stocks available.
The barrels are screwed on really tight. I re barreled one once and had to cut the barrel right in front of the shoulder down to the major thread to remove it.
I had one in .223 and really liked it.
