  • what is the difference in a 3-12x40,vss a 6-18x40 ? I will get a .17 Savage minimalist to plink with and there is a great difference in price. These are BSA scopes.

  • Joe, the major difference is the variable power. At the lowest setting the 3x magnifies 3 times and the 6x magnifies 6 times which is twice the magnification at the lowest setting. At the 12x and 18x max setting the 18x gives you a 3rd more magnification which will yield a larger object picture but a narrower field of view for more precision shots. I would recommend the 6-18 x 40 for the 17 Savage which is a flat shooting cartridge. Cheers and stay safe!
