There are some rifles rated for 5.56/.223
For a gun rated for 5.56/.223 -
The same magazine hold both .223 and 5.56.
A rifle rated for 5.56 can shoot both 5.56 and .223.
A rifle rated for .223 can not safely fire the higher pressures of 5.56.
The 223 Remington and 5.56 NATO cartridges have identical case dimensions but are not completely interchangeable.
