  • reading the rules I think a S&W sport 2 or many other entry level ar style rifles would work just fine from the rules "6.1.1 M16/AR15-Type Service Rifle. The rifle must be an M16 U. S. Service Rifle or a similar AR15-type commercial rifle that is derived from the M16 service rifle design. Rifles must exhibit the general overall external

appearance of the M-16 rifle or carbine. Visible barrel profiles, handguards or quad rails, receivers, pistol grips, carry handles or rails and fixed or collapsible stocks must appear essentially the same as the M16 service rifle and must incorporate the following features; functional forward assist, integral case deflector, functional ejection port cover, MIL-SPEC standard charging handle, and a Picatinny rail located at standard MIL-SPEC height. The following specific rules apply to this rifle:" link to rule book https://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/Rulebook.pdf

  • The .308 that was linked will not work as per the 2017 rule book section 6.1.1 "Cartridge. Must be chambered for the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO (.223) cartridge"

  • Hi Garry, this would be my choice. It is a DS Vrms SV58CP 308 - Many people shoot this in competition as it abides by all the rules.

  • Be aware that the ammo must be 5.56 NATO not .223

  • I would get him a Buds "Gift Card" and let him choose the rifle of his choice.

  • I also believe the ruger sport would work great and at a price point you can not argue. Deltron also has some really nice entry level that comes with accessories most at that price point do not.
