thanks for all the replies, I sent email to dickinson they have not replied or acknowledged the question. I suggest to budsgunshop to verify the info displayed of overall lenght 31". In my case if I had bought the gun expecting 31" and I get 38.5 as in one of the replies I would return it ("not as described")

I've been an NRA member way longer than I have owned a firearm because I'm a patriot. I bought my first sidearm, C&C a few years back (a S&W 9mm) and I love it. I want to get my first AR15 now. I'm not a serious shooter, and I want a good "starter" that doesn't cost too much. Again, I'm a novice, so I know very little about ARs. What caliber are they? What's a good brand for a beginner? I was in the Army as Combat Engineer (Airborne) and learned to operate all kinds of different weapon systems civilians never get to use. How is it that I can walk into the brick and mortar store in Tennessee and by a rifle off of the shelf but cannot purchase the same rifle online without paying the $30 VIP fee?
